Cooperative Board Games: A Co-op Mode to Watch

October 6, 2026 · by Wesley Hart

The best cooperative board games are the ones where a plan comes together across the table, where two players lean in and solve a problem the game has thrown at them together. I love that feeling, so I am always scanning for titles that offer it. Lately I have been watching a tabletop MOBA called Trials of MAYA, live on Gamefound, and while it is not primarily a co-op title, it includes a cooperative mode that scratches exactly that itch. These are previews of a prototype, so I am describing what the designers and reviewers show rather than a final retail copy.

Where co-op fits among cooperative board games

Let me be clear about what this is. Trials of MAYA is a competitive arena game at its core, with a cooperative scenario mode layered on as one of several ways to play. In that mode you and your allies make shared tactical decisions against the game itself, against MAYA, rather than against each other. If you enjoy co-op board games but also want a title that flexes into head-to-head play, that flexibility is a genuine draw. Learn to Play Games give a clear tour of the modes and terrain and spell out the range: “It is a one to four player game that takes roughly one to three hours to play per session, and it can be played in a number of different ways, including cooperative, solo and even competitive.” That single box covering all three is a big part of the appeal.

What is Trials of MAYA?

Trials of MAYA is an expandable card-driven arena combat game. It combines three genres: MOBAs, classic 90s tactics games, and TCGs without booster packs. It plays 1 to 4 players in 60 to 180 minutes for ages 14 and up. Siege runs as 2v2, The Battle for Dhaara, and 1v1, Skirmish for Vyati. It launches on Gamefound September 8, 2026.

What the cooperative mode brings to the table

The tactical texture that makes co-op satisfying is already baked into the design. The Dice Tower spotlighted it as a non-collectible, dice-free arena game that “combines the crunchy strategic depth of modern MOBAs with the spatial puzzling of 90s tactics games.” Shared puzzles like that are perfect for players planning moves together, weighing high ground, void zones and minion tempo as a team. Joe at boardgameswithjoe rounds out the picture, describing unique champions and multiple game modes: a card based arena combat game with customisable decks and, as he notes, free-for-all, co-op and solo modes. Because each champion is distinct, a cooperative session still lets each player bring their own toolkit to the shared plan.

Why I am watching it

For fans of cooperative strategy board games, the pitch here is nuance rather than a headline. You are not buying a pure co-op box, you are getting a rich tactical arena game whose co-op scenarios give you those shared decision moments when you want them, alongside Siege and Headhunters when you want the fight. Sessions run 60 to 180 minutes, and you can try Trials of MAYA on Tabletop Simulator before backing. If a versatile game with a real co-op mode appeals, the Gamefound campaign is live now and worth a look.

Rulebooks and public metadata are on BoardGameGeek, the full breakdown is on the official page, and the campaign is live on Gamefound now.
